History comes alive in the classes of the PCA Upper School. An engaged faculty leads students through a study of world and American history.
Students of social studies first review world history, looking at the major civilizations of the world and the significant events, people, and beliefs of each region of the world. In the sophomore and junior years, students focus on American history, looking at how political, international, and social developments have combined to provide broader opportunities for individuals than are available in most other cultures.
Students may also select from electives covering European History, History of World War II/the Cold War, New Hampshire/New England History, and Civics. Students will acquire cultural literacy across American history, improve their communication skills, and develop an appreciation for the responsibilities of citizenship.
One particular focus in the social studies department is on the development of writing skills. PCA has fielded several winners for the Colonial Dames Writing contest and the local Seacoast Republican Women’s Committee Essay contest.
