Fourth Quarter Lunch Offerings Are Now Available Online

Deadline to submit your lunch order is Wednesday, March 24, 2010.

If you are like many parents, you are tired of making lunches… so why not order them through PCA?  Follow this link to order online today… http://www.pcaschool.org/parent-resources/school-store.html.

Fourth quarter lunches begin on Monday, March 29.

Please note:

1.)    If you have both an Upper School student and Lower School student, you will need to place your orders as two separate transactions.

2.)    Once you have chosen your selections, you will need to click “confirm” on one page of the electronic order form and click “submit” on the second page (found at the very bottom).  You will get two email confirmations if the transaction has been done correctly.

3.)    Changes will be accepted for the first two weeks of the quarter (until Friday, April 9).  Due to the high volume of changes and the time involved, a $10 fee will be charged for each change after April 9.

All Lower School queries for lunches may be directed to Kathy Deame at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 603.742.3617, Ext. 119 and all Upper School queries may be directed to Kathy Towle at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 603.742.3617, Ext. 106.

Please remember that access to the electronic order form will be blocked as of Wednesday, March 24.

Spring Pictures

Lifetouch will be taking spring pictures of all students PCAP – 8th grade on

Tuesday, March 30, 2010.

Informational flyers will be distributed in the coming week.

The format for spring pictures is slightly different than fall pictures in that, all students are photographed with a “Spring Naturals” background and will receive a printed picture packet.  In this way, parents are given the opportunity to decide from the actual finished product if they would like to make a purchase.  Payment envelopes are turned in to the Lower School office.  If you choose not to purchase the packet, simply return it in its entirety to the Lower School office.  There is no re-take day offered with spring pictures.

Of special note:  If you would like to have your spring picture include siblings or be a family portrait, you are more than welcome to do so.  We would be happy to accommodate groupings of your choice.  Please coordinate with Amy Chick.

If you are available to volunteer for spring picture day, please contact

the Lower School office.  603.742.3617, Ext. 102.

Read-a-thon News
Last call for reading minutes!

As of Friday morning, a February Break surge carried out reading minutes to over 725,000!   All student minutes are now in, but if any staff or parents have NOT reported their reading minutes for the month of February (or any part of it), please do so – we’d love to get ‘over the top’ and meet our goal of reading a million minutes school wide!!!   The online form for reporting staff/parent minutes is http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GYPYGWD .  We’ll report the final tally next week!

What should I read (or re-read) this month? The Library suggests:

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

During March, why not read (or re-read) this classic coming-of-age tale of courage in the face of virulent racism -- it's been voted by American librarians as one of the best books of the 20th century and it is New Hampshire's choice for its 2010 Big Read program, sponsored by the Center for the Book at the NH State Library!

Summer at PCA

PCA is offering eight weeks of exciting, competitive, and educational day programs for children entering grades K-7!  Each week will have a different theme.  Themes will include:

June 21-25  Introduction to Theatre

Have you ever wanted to be an actor? Do you like to play dress up? Do you love to play games? If so, this camp is perfect for you.  During this week, students will learn to use their God-given talent to create theatre through the use of improvisation, movement, music, vocal exercises, and story drama.  It will be led by PCA Theatre teacher and SAG actor Grace Thorsen.

June 28 – July 2  Hoopin’ it Up - Basketball Week

PCA basketball coaches Brandon Yeo, Michael Hickey, Derek Summers, and Jon Towle will all be involved in teaching a basic skills camp that will get the competitive juices flowing!  Contests and both team and individual competitions will be held throughout the week!

July 5-9  Blast Off to Fun with Mr. Hickey!

Have you ever wondered about space exploration? Or wanted to build a rocket and blast it off? Now you can learn about both at PCA this summer! By the end of the week, students will have a greater understanding of the history of space exploration and rocket science and will also have the chance to launch their own model rocket.

July 12-16  Soccer week with the Charlotte Eagles

Come play with the pros! The Charlotte Eagles Soccer Club operates a men's professional soccer franchise and a women's W-League franchise. The club is a member of the USL Hall of Fame because of the success they have had, including making the playoffs 15 out of the last 17 seasons.  This week provides players exceptional soccer instruction and development, as well as a competitive, but safe, environment.

July 19-23  LEGO Engineering

These aren’t your grandfather’s LEGOs! Using very advanced LEGO® parts and pieces; this class integrates science and math in an exciting, high-energy atmosphere.  Students experiment with and learn about gears, levers, wheels, axles, structures, forces and simple machines.

July 26-30  To Your Art’s Content

Alesia from To Your Art’s Content will be teaching the arts of Pottery Painting, Glass Fusing, Clay Building, and much more! Each day children will create one fired art piece as well as many amazingly fun crafts!  They will have “Fun at the Beach” making all sort of beach themed pieces.

August 2-6  Tennis with Mrs. Gant

If you would like to have an incredible amount of fun while learning new tennis skills then this is the week for you!  Proper techniques will be taught for serves, volleys, forehands and backhands with a focus on how to create top spin.  Games and a round robin tournament will give you the opportunity to show off what you have learned!  Mrs. Gant is a former Female Athlete of the Year winner and DIII tennis player.

August 9-13  Marine Biology Week

This session is for children who are interested in science, curious about the ocean and want to engage hands-on with local marine life!  Katherine Watson, marine scientist and PCA teacher with degrees from Northeastern University and Long Island University, will raise awareness about the marine environment through fun activities like encountering tide pool animals, learning about beaches and salt marshes, and recognizing marine life from seaweeds to whales!

Daily Schedule:  Each day begins at 9 AM and will end at 3 PM.  Days will consist of two to three hours of core instruction time and the rest of the day will be filled with games, activities, and crafts that relate to the theme for that week.

Expected Costs:  Depending on the theme, programs will start at $200 for the full week.  Parents will be able to register their children for just the core instruction time if they wish for a separate rate.

Extended Care:  There will also be morning care from 7am – 9am and aftercare from 3pm – 5:30pm if needed.

For more information about each week of programming visit our website at www.pcaschool.org Under the “Parent Resources” tab, select “School Store,” and then click on “Summer at PCA” located on the left side of the page.   If you have any question, please contact Derek Summers at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Dear Parents of 11th graders:

I will be meeting with juniors after Feb. vacation and beginning our conversations about their post-PCA plans.

Occasionally, parents ask me whether visits to colleges are warranted--even in advance of assembling a college list. My answer is “It depends!” Some students benefit from touring a nearby college in advance of setting up a profile on www.collegeboard.com where they will be asked to select a size limitation as well as other variables. If young people don’t know the qualitative difference between 2,000 and 10,000, they may not think it matters to them. Teaching them what criteria they should use to select their choices is important to insuring success in this process. There are lots of good articles available on this topic, including: “Easy Ways to Start your College Search,” which can be found on www.collegeboard.com .

I also want to draw your attention to the Junior Parents College info night on Thurs. Mar. 18th @ 6:30 here in Troiano Hall. Parents have found these sessions very useful, so I hope someone in your family will be able to attend.

As always, if you have questions, please contact me in the Guidance Office.

Every blessing,

Linda J. Haskins

Director of Guidance and Counseling
