Dear Lower School parents:

Friday, May 18th is our annual Spring Fling event hosted by the students at the Upper School.

We have been working hard preparing for this exciting afternoon (3 PM – 7 PM, at PCA).  We don’t

want anyone to miss out on the fun, so if you have a student that wants to attend but you are unable

to be with your child during Spring Fling, please consider signing your student up for this offer!

Students from the Upper School would be more than happy to take your child from after care

for the afternoon so they can participate in Spring Fling.  The children will be in small groups and

assigned to a freshman student – we promise we will take good care of them!  We have learned that it

works best to group the children by age, and not necessarily by family.  It is your choice, which you

can make by filling in the appropriate space below.

Students in junior high only may go to the Spring Fling at 3:20, regular dismissal time, without adult        supervision so long as he/she has written parent permission to do so.  (An e-mail to Mrs. Chick works)

If the student does not have a note from his/her parent, the student may use the office phone to obtain

verbal permission.  Students in grades K-5 may not go to the Spring Fling without an adult.

A K-5 student may be dismissed to the care of a sibling of high school age or older so long as we have

written parent permission to do so.  Again, if the student does not have a note from his/her parent, the

student may call from the office for verbal permission.  Any student grade K-8 remaining at the end of    dismissal must go to aftercare.

If you are interested, please fill out the enclosed form and either send it in to school with your child

(attention: Derek Summers) or give it to your regular after care teacher by Wednesday May 16th.

Please reserve early – space is limited! Please return this form with the money by the deadline to assure

the time and information we need to take good care of your child.  We will have them back in the MPR,

with their backpacks, etc., at the time you indicate below.  If you have any questions or concerns, please

feel free to contact Derek Summers at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or Britta Ayer at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Summer at PCA

PCA is excited to be able to offer our summer programming for 2012!  Eight weeks of thrilling, competitive, and educational day programs will be available for children entering grades K-8!  The programs will start Monday, June 18 and end Friday, August 10.  Most programs run from 9 AM – 3 PM but we do have others that are just for part of the day as well.  Extended care will be available, both before (starting at 7:30 AM) and after (ending at 5:30 PM), if needed.  Parents can register their child by the week or by the day.  Whether you are looking for a sports camp, day camp, or educational camp for your child, we have something for everyone!  Follow this link to learn more about the new and exciting themes being offered!

These summer camps are open to non-PCA children as well, so invite a friend.  It is a great way to introduce a neighbour or friend to what PCA has to offer!

The April Athletes of the Month:

Erin McGovern (Track and Field) and Sean McKenna (Baseball) have been selected for the honor after having great months of April on the track and on the baseball field.

Erin McGovern is a senior team captain from Dover who is a 12 season varsity athlete (actually 14 seasons if you count her 8th grade year).  For the month of April, McGovern was the girls’ leading scorer with over 160 points in 7 meets. At meets she frequently wins high jump, 100m hurdles or 300m hurdles.  In addition she has league championship qualifying marks in the High Jump, 100m hurdles (ranked 5th in D3), 300m hurdles and 200m.  In addition she is a great team leader and role model for our athletes.  This is Erin’s second Athlete of the Month honor this year.  Erin plans to continue her track and field career at Roanoke College beginning next fall.

Sean McKenna is a senior captain of the baseball team from South Berwick, ME.  For the month of April, Sean was 5-0 as the starting pitcher.  He had a 0.60 ERA, has 24 strikeouts and only 1 base on balls.  Sean is one of the top pitchers in the area.  From the plate, Sean had a batting average of .571 and an OBP of .612.  He had 9 extra base hits with 7 doubles and 2 triples.  Sean is a leader on the PCA Baseball team that sits undefeated at 8-0.  McKenna will be attending and playing for the Wheaton (IL) College Thunder beginning in the fall.

Dear Parents of Seniors;

On Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29th and 30th, we will initiate a bold new program to prepare our seniors for what they will encounter the first week they are enrolled on a college campus.   The DVD curriculum sponsored by Campus Crusade, called College Life 101, which Kate Copeland and I will facilitate, lays out the realities that all of our graduates will be exposed to binge drinking, sexual activity and pornography, and the enemy of their souls will use loneliness as the trap to lure them into ungodly behavior that some will regret for years to come.

We need your help with this mission to prepare our soon-to-be grads for the snares that await them. In conversation with Sharon Gamble, I recognized that she is preparing her “Wednesday girls” for dealing with this same demon, loneliness. Saying no to that cute guy or girl’s invitation to that first party requires forethought, good information, conviction and courage. The program that we will introduce to them asks them to make decisions in advance about their own beliefs, morals, vulnerabilities and resources. Finding alternatives to partying requires that one is equipped in advance. Looking into the resources of local churches and organizations in the town where your son or daughter will be living is critical to helping them negotiate the myriad of decisions that will be made in their first weeks away at school.

Please continue these conversations with your senior about resisting the need to be accepted, and how they plan to deal with the “invitations” they will receive when they move away from home and onto a college campus.  Through frank discussions, role plays, video clips, journaling, and any other venue available to us, let us resolve that our students will not be naïve to the dangers that await them when freedom and godlessness are all around them. We are conveying this critical message through all our available resources, but we believe it will take the concerted efforts of us all to arm them for the onslaught of temptation that awaits them.

Thank you for partnering with us to empower our students to stand strong against the wiles of the enemy.

Please pray with us that the message will reach our students in a profound and lasting way.

May God bless all our efforts,

Linda J. Haskins

Director of Guidance and Counseling
