Primary

Coming to school for the first time, your young student has one thought in mind—learning to read.  In the primary department (K-2), students at PCA master the tools of literacy.  Learning to decode using a phonics-based program, the students expand their enjoyment of books from actively listening to reading for oneself by the end of kindergarten.  Pacing of this process is adjusted for the learner and supported with a robust resource program.

In addition to early reading, the mastery of numeracy and number operations is begun during these years.  Placing manipulatives alongside problem-solving, the learning process provides opportunity to experience both the “how” and the “why” of arithmetic.

By the end of these years, students move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”  The classroom community is a critical part of success and students learn through Bible stories and how to love God and care for one another.
