Students in grades 3-5 are capable, more independent learners, experiencing a great deal of change and variance in cognitive processing, but needing to master much knowledge if they are to become successful learners of the future. Recognizing that demands on working memory will significantly increase as the student’s higher level thinking develops, the elementary student learns both declarative and procedural knowledge that will support his or her working memory.
Mastery of reading comprehension strategies is supported through a basal reading program, the resource room and research-based intervention tools. Immediate recall of math facts, using the proper rules of grammar, and visualizing a history timeline are points of learning in the elementary years that are known to support critical thinking.
Able to process more, the elementary student studies the Bible as a tool for spiritual growth, learning how to read the Bible, where to find things, and how to use a concordance provide students of this age an opportunity to develop personal Bible study disciplines.
