DOVER, NH — High school students at Portsmouth Christian Academy at Dover emerged as the New Hampshire state winners as they competed against thousands of students in the U.S. and abroad in the 55th Knowledge Master Open academic competition December 8.
During this intense two-hour online competition, students face their computers and 200 tough questions to vie for top scores based on the accuracy and speed of their answers. A total of 627 schools from around the world competed in this year’s competition. The contest runs on classroom computers and results are tabulated into overall, state, and enrollment-size rankings by the tournament host, Academic Hallmarks.
PCA’s Upper School “A-team” scored 1399 of 2000 possible points to claim the top spot in the state against tough competition, including Phillips Exeter Academy and Hanover High School. The team also earned second place in its enrollment division, out of a field of 60 similarly-sized American and international schools.
Five additional teams of PCA high school and middle school students also earned solid scores in the competition. Claiming top honors in the state for the middle school category are PCA students, Connor Foley, Mac Stevenson, Bekah Lee, Carly Baracco, and Devan Littlefield. In fact, PCA’s middle school students were the only representatives in that age category for New Hampshire.
Coached by Mrs. Donna Capern and Dr. Raymond Gamble, PCA’s academic challenge teams also compete regularly and successfully on Granite State Challenge, in the New Hampshire Quiz Bowl League, and in other academic competitions. “It’s exciting to see the students fly through the questions they know, and work together quickly and effectively to figure out the rest. Their years of practice and competition are paying off,” says Capern.
